Life Drawing 26.04.15 - Automat

Last week was a busy one so I didn't get a chance to post my work from the last life drawing session I attended in Milton Keynes.  We thought it might make a change to create a piece inspired by the work of a well-known artwork.  I was quite keen for our work this time to have more of a narrative, rather than just a study of a figure I wanted to capture some of the space around.

I've recently been looking a lot at the work of Hopper and I love the way that he uses the environment around the people in the painting to create the mood and suggest a narrative.  I took along a print of 'Automat' for us to use as inspiration.  For those of you who don't know it, here it is (this is Hopper's and not mine!)

As we only had 5 hours from setting up to packing away, so realistically a little over 3 hours painting.   We tried to keep the set up pretty simple removing some of the 'stuff' in the background.  Here are the stages in my painting.

And finally a close up of the figure.

I'm really pleased with what I managed to achieve in the session.  Let me know what you think.
